When I saw the email subject line I jumped up and down and squealed with delight! You see, I recently concluded a 9-month coach training program to become a Certified Human Potential Coach and had been excitedly anticipating word regarding my certification.
This was it. The moment I had been working toward. The reason I was transitioning from an 18-year career in public relations. The email was from one of my amazing instructors from the Human Potential Institute — a global coach training and human development company established by Dave Asprey, Founder and CEO of Bulletproof and Human Potential Teacher, Dr. Mark Atkinson.
The coaching program, which is accredited by the International Coach Federation, consisted of more than 125 hours of training, 45 hours of live guided coaching practice and skill development sessions, a 2-day workshop in Austin, Texas, a 35-week virtual training program, bi-weekly calls with my buddy group, maintaining an individual client schedule with a minimum of five clients and a two month Mindfulness training program. Many weeks I was meeting 3+ days per week with my instructors and/or fellow cohort members located all over the world - coaching while being observed or being coached, learning and growing.
When I answered the call (more on this to come!) to enroll in this program, I had already been on a trajectory of self-development with my own habit change and healing. The training launched me on an exploration I could not have imagined. Every skill, tool, technology and process was included because of its ability to bring about effective change. My world was opened, potential unlocked and I continue to stretch further than I knew I could.
Two key things led me here: first it was my desire to support others in realizing and living their potential - by helping them start where they are and harness their own power to find what they seek; the other was my own fascination with that power that we all have to influence and change the course of our lives by the decisions we make daily.
In essence, doing this work in our own lives has the ability to help open our world up, offering the delicious space of possibility and positive change. Can you imagine if every human on the planet knew that:
We have the power to change the things in our lives (including our thoughts) that we don’t like and create the reality that we seek. By gaining clarity on what’s keeping us stuck, we can make intentional choices and create our own tactical serendipity.
Our outcomes are primarily self-generated by the habitual actions we engage in every day. With that in mind, we don’t need to believe that external forces are driving our reality, we have the ability to create our own destiny through experimentation and conscious change – and thus, a responsibility to do so.
We are responsible to self-regulate everything – emotions, responses to others, action, responses to challenges or failure, etc. Taking a pause and “hearing” what our body has to say before acting can help us respond instead of react. Using the body in this way (embodiment) helps us access our unconscious world to better understand what direction to take (or not take) when making decisions.
We generate our own happiness. We just need to understand how to access it. (I learned my happiness is generated by acts of kindness, expressing gratitude and savoring joy. In the spirit of expressing gratitude, thank you for taking time out of YOUR day to read this.)
If any of those ideas resonate with you, know that it is possible for you to start where you are, find what you seek, and feel connected to and supported by life. Change is possible when we choose it. I may even know a few science-backed shortcuts to help you along the way. ;)
What’s calling you?
