You Actually Have the Power to Shape Your Nervous System

You Actually Have the Power to Shape Your Nervous System

Most of us have been taught to disconnect from our bodies and our internal knowing and look outside of ourselves for the answers we seek.

We are taught that authority figures, such as parents, teachers, doctors have the answers and know what’s best.

Society teaches us that our possessions, accomplishments, job, physical appearance, number of friends, the success of our family or romantic relationships, income, etc. determine our worth and value in the world.

We even look outside ourselves for love, happiness, peace, and our sense of self.

The ironic thing is that we look out through our own personal lens and sense of safety and then make a determination about what the world wants us to be.

What Emotions Are You Carrying that You Can Release?

What Emotions Are You Carrying that You Can Release?

I have always found it fitting that my name is Carrie.

For so long, I felt that I was always “carrying” stuff. In my younger years, I was lugging my things to and from school - I had a year in elementary school without a backpack for some reason. And once I was older, I always seemed to have my arms full walking into work.

Of course, once I had children, I felt that I was truly living up to my name. I barely had enough room to tote the tiny humans themselves between the diaper bag, toys, blankets, teethers, and endless snacks.

With the focus on the external, physical stuff, I never paid much attention to what was going on inside. I would get stressed or face complicated feelings, and I would blame it on not enough time, organization, sleep, money, or maybe even someone or something outside of myself.

Mindfulness Brings Big Benefits to the Mind and Body

Mindfulness Brings Big Benefits to the Mind and Body

It seems simple. But many think that “it’s too hard” or “they don’t have the time.”

Stopping. Pausing. Paying attention to purpose without judging yourself.

The accumulating scientific evidence of mindfulness suggests that the investment may be small compared to the big benefits you could experience.

This is Your Brain on Chronic Stress: Any Questions?

This is Your Brain on Chronic Stress: Any Questions?

I’m sure this is not news to you that just as drugs can have a negative impact on your brain, stress, especially chronic stress, can do the same.

The late Bruce McEwen, a neuroscientist from Rockefeller University, illustrated this when he said, “Because stress changes the way the brain’s neurons communicate with each other, chronic stress can cause our brains, nervous systems, and our behavior to adjust to a vigilant and reactive state.”

Essentially, chronic stress constantly sends your body and brain signals that you are under threat. If left unchecked, it can wreak havoc on your overall well-being and eventually bring you to the point of burnout. I picture this underlying current of stressors, large and small, as cracks in our resilience and ability to respond rather than react.

It Was an Invisible Bruise that Could Be Healed Over Time

It Was an Invisible Bruise that Could Be Healed Over Time

Now the bruise is a visual reminder that “I made a mistake.” That I did something “wrong.” As a righty, the soreness sharply reminds me of this every time I grasp my pen to write something down or pick something up to complete my daily tasks. It’s easy to focus on this outcome of my miscalculated exit out of the house. If I do, it brings me straight back to incorrect thinking.

You see, I used to think there was something inherently wrong with me as if I was broken at birth. I always strived to do better, to be better, and to seek validation and approval for my efforts…

My Anger Playlist Was on Repeat and Only I Could Change the Channel

My Anger Playlist Was on Repeat and Only I Could Change the Channel

One of the most prominent difficult feelings I was seeking to “rid” myself of when I began meditating was anger. Though I worked hard to suppress my anger as a child, I found myself experiencing anger like a volcano as time went on. I would swallow it, bottle it up, and store it until the pressure became too great, and then I would blow.

Actually Sit and Feel Your Big Emotions: Acceptance Optional

Actually Sit and Feel Your Big Emotions: Acceptance Optional

While it’s a natural human reaction to push away pain, resisting it and oftentimes judging ourselves for the having the feeling can leave us feeling more frustrated and upset. Add frustration and self-judgment to the unresolved emotional storage that sits below the surface and it can prolong the pain and build pressure.

Assess Your Life

Assess Your Life

How satisfied are you with your life? Can you sum up your response in a sentence or two or is it more complex than that?

Today, we are going to use a simple tool called the “Wheel of Life” to conduct a life assessment to determine where you are satisfied and where you have opportunities to increase your satisfaction.

Life has its natural ebb and flow and ups and downs. By taking a closer look at how satisfied you are in different areas of your life you can identify trends in a particular area. Is there a consistent area where you are not satisfied? What can you do to shift that?
